Many predict that 2010 will be a magic number for Marloes Coenen, a talented, 5-foot-9, 28-year-old from the Netherlands. A strikingly attractive submission, Coenen impressively avenged a split-decision loss to Roxanne Modaferri by winning by 1:05, first-round submission (armbar) last Nov. 7, Coenen before challenging the rugged Cris Cyborg for the Strikeforce Female Women's 145-pound title.
Coenen, whose brothers and grandfather were involved in martial arts, began training at the age of 14. "I grew up in a very small town (Olst) with a few thousand people, a lot of cows and grass and a river nearby," she said. "I had to go to school by bike, and it was through a forst. "My friends went to a different school than me so a lot of times I had to go through the forest by myself. There always were stories about (weird stuff happening in the forst so) I thought, 'I have to learn to defend myself.'" After her MMA career concludes, Coenen plans to study Communications Sciences in Amsterdam.
